Curbing Suicidal Tendencies with Ease

Question – How and why the suicidal tendencies are growing in today’s world.

Today’s day and age has become so competitive not just in the real world but also in the virtual world. Suicidal tendencies are growing because of excessive stress that people are going through in today’s age and it’s in all age groups starting from the youngest to the oldest of the generation. At present the statistics of Suicidal rates are so high for India that if the situation is not handled well we will lose our major chunk of generation to Suicides. According to Wikipedia with 800,000 people committing suicide worldwide every year, of these 1,35,000 or 17% are residents of India, while our population is 17.5% of the worldwide population.

The young are not able to cope with school stress, workplace pressures, societal or virtual pressures, love and relationship complexities while the older generation is mostly struggling with loneliness or disrespect and lack of love from their family or loved ones.

Question – What are the situations which force an individual to commit suicide

Committing Suicide is either a sudden impulsive decision or it’s a well thought of planned decision. Either ways it’s a precious life lost. Suicide is generally committed at a weak mental moment or weak state of mind. These moments can occur when a person has been in acute depression which again could be caused because of various

reasons. Extreme helplessness or acute frustration also causes a person to become weak in their minds. Financial issues, marital or relationship issues, parental high expectations or unsupportive family, virtual expectations or cyber bullying are some of the reasons which can drive a person to take his/her life. The above mentioned are the reasons however the feeling it invokes in a person is the feeling of being a burden that leads a person to think that his/her family or the world around them will be better off without him/her. Such thoughts become so strong that it makes the mind to believe in it completely and force oneself to take a drastic step of ending ones life

Question 3 – What can be done to successfully curb them and prevent people from taking the step?

Suicidal thoughts or tendencies are not a disease or a disorder it is just a desire to break free from all the miseries of life by escaping from it. Almost 95% of Suicides are committed by people who are under some form of depression. Depression is a state of mind that stops us from taking any help from someone else or to open up your mind and thoughts to another person. This closing yourself and not being able to talk about your thoughts leads you to remain in that weak state of mind without any help and that is the time when in the loneliness people take the step of committing suicide.

To curb such suicidal thoughts, it is important for us to find the right person or a counselor or a good healer and talk our heart out. Talking can help in getting a perspective to our own thoughts and can help in curbing the decision to commit suicide. There can be some proactive initiatives that educational institutions can employ such as Seminars or talks on mental well being, Meditation camps or workshops on Emotional Management as it is our emotions if not managed well can drive us to create havoc in our life. If we start early in educating the youth on the ways how we can manage pressures and stressors of life we can definitely reduce in curbing such thoughts and keep our Suicidal rates low.
